Why The Project Matters

This is one of the golden opportunities
to urgently heal the broken samaya (Tantric vows),
to immediately purify the most negative karma
caused by past heinous actions,
to instantly expand the meritfield as vast as the space,
and to quickly nourish the seeds of enlightenment
by clearing all the possible obstacles on the path!

His Holiness The Gyalwang Drukpa

Because of his constant concerns of what has been happening in the world, such as the Swine Flu, the Bird Flu, the different manmade and natural disasters, wars and misfortunes, His Holiness The Gyalwang Drukpa has been looking for an urgent antidote. Besides taking the monastics and lay practitioners on Pad Yatra (walking pilgrimage) to different sacred places in the Himalayas and actively promoting eco-friendly way of living in all parts of the world, His Holiness feels that it is extremely important to do the following in order to counter the effects of ripening negative karma, both individual and collective:

  • Find a primordially sacred place, with a strong energy to purify and heal
  • The blessing power of this particular sacred place must not be contaminated
  • At ths holy place, build a Vajra Wheel, within it consecrate ONE BILLION COPIES of 100-syllable mantra, so that with every spin, the effect of a billion purification is achieved, and since it is spinned at a power place, the multiplying effect is inconceivable
  • The project must be undertaken by 108 great benefactors who have strong belief and devotion in the purification practice and effect of Vajrasattva
  • The number "108" is significant, because it represents all the possible non-virtuous and impure actions of the past, present and future, and all the virtuous and positive possibilities for attaining enlightenment
  • An annual grand Vajrasattva prayer to be held at the Vajra Wheel and also as many times as possible in all the different parts of the world

After many years searching for a suitable location for this project, His Holiness decided that Swayambhunath is the most suitable site. However, there was no possibility of acquiring any land, big or small, at the stupa, as everywhere at and around the stupa had been occupied.

In late April 2011, His Holiness proudly informed that a small piece of land at Swayambhunath Stupa, one of the most sacred sites in this world, was offered to him, for the purpose of constructing the Vajra Wheel. FINALLY, A PRAYER FULFILLED!
